Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool won the Champions League in 2019, beating fellow English side Tottenham 2-0 in an all-Premier-League final in Madrid, avenging their own defeat in the previous year's final to Real Madrid with a squad further strengthened by the additions of goalkeeper Alisson Becker and centre-back Virgil van Dijk, both of whom proved transformative in giving the side a defensive solidity that had been its main weakness in the 2018 final.
