Michael Owen, at the height of his early-career pace and finishing ability, scored twice in the FA Cup final comeback against Arsenal a few weeks earlier, while Steven Gerrard was beginning to establish himself as the engine of the side from central midfield, a role he would go on to make entirely his own over the following decade.
