The 2004-05 Real Madrid squad represented the absolute peak of the Galácticos era under club president Florentino Pérez, with Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, Luís Figo, David Beckham and Raúl all featuring in the same team simultaneously — arguably the single most star-studded collection of attacking talent ever assembled by one club at one time. Managed by Brazilian coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo for part of the season, the team's collective star power never quite translated into a cohesive tactical unit, and Madrid finished the season without a major trophy, eliminated from the Champions League in the round of 16 by Juventus and losing the La Liga title race to Barcelona's resurgent squad under Frank Rijkaard. This gap between individual brilliance and collective underachievement became the defining critique of the entire Galácticos project during this period, with critics pointing to a lack of defensive discipline and squad balance as Pérez continued prioritising marquee attacking signings over less glamorous positions.
