Bayern Munich won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double in 2018-19 under Niko Kovač, with Robert Lewandowski firing 22 league goals to finish as the Bundesliga's top scorer and Manuel Neuer continuing to redefine the goalkeeping position with his sweeper-keeper style behind a defence anchored by Jérôme Boateng and captain-in-all-but-name Thiago. The league title was secured only on the final day, with Bayern edging out a resurgent RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund side that had led the table for large parts of the season, before the club completed the double with a comfortable cup final win. This squad represented something of a bridge campaign for Bayern, still built around several members of the 2013 treble-winning core (Neuer, Thiago, David Alaba) but increasingly reliant on Lewandowski's individual goalscoring output following the departures of Robben and Ribéry-era wide players from their peak years. Kovač would be dismissed partway through the following season, but the 2018-19 double kept Bayern's remarkable run of consecutive Bundesliga titles alive, a streak of domestic dominance that stretched deep into the following decade.
